Reaching out from Heart Children Ireland

As Margaret Rogers, CEO and Linda Hogan, Administrator, we are reaching out to connect to you all. This is a very strange time and we do understand that everyone is coping with so many restrictions. We are hearing from so many of you and thinking of you all.

We continue to be available on our busy support line. At the moment, the best number to reach us on for any reason is 085 7237797 from 9am to 1pm Monday to Friday. Please do bear with us if you are trying to get through, the line is extremely busy and we will do our very best to answer your queries.

Unfortunately, many of our different services and fundraising activities have been put on hold for the moment (we would welcome any creative fundraising ideas at this difficult time).

We have had to suspend our regular coffee mornings at the Children’s Heart Centre and our drop in support service in Carmichael Centre where the HCI office is based. Our 30-year celebration conference (scheduled for June 13th) has been deferred and we are hopeful we can run this conference later this year.

We are working hard to continue some of our services where possible. For example, we are continuing to process grant requests from families where there is an urgent medical need. We are also particularly busy at the moment fulfilling our advocacy roles on behalf of our members. Should you need to link in with us do not hesitate to contact us on the support line mentioned above.

We are very happy to tell you that the Heart Children Ireland Psychology Service continues to operate at this time, albeit that it is a reduced service via telephone. Those who were due to meet Dr. Deirdre O’Neill, Chartered Clinical Psychologist, face-to-face in the coming weeks have been offered telephone appointments instead. Those who were availing of telephone support already are continuing to do so. Members who have not availed of the service to date are most welcome to contact Dr. O’Neill should the need arise.

The psychology service was set up to provide members with psychological support around cardiac issues. See the details of the service on the Heart Children Ireland website. Please note that the service has now been extended to support our members around psychological issues relating to Coronavirus (COVID-19). Members have been scheduling telephone appointments with Dr. O’Neill to discuss a wide range of related issues. Examples include: how to set up positive family structures for people of different ages during self-isolation; coping with health-related anxieties exacerbated by the virus; coping with virus-related restrictions; and dealing with relationship and mood challenges at this time. Dr. O’Neill, The Irish Psychology Service, can be contacted on 085 2739772 or irishpsychologyservice@gmail.com

We will be doing our very best to keep you updated on our services and also on updates from the HSE.

We look forward to meeting you all later in the year and to re activating all our services. Stay safe, we are thinking of you all.

Margaret and Linda
